Sony’s MDR-3Rs are a Modern Take on the First Walkman Headphones

Sony Electronics is tapping into the trend toward wired headphones with a pair that are USB-C compatible for a modern spin and a throwback to the design of a pair that debuted alongside the original Walkman TPS-L2 player. The MDR-3R is inspired by the MDR-3 introduced in 1979.

The MDR-3R retains the original design but adds modern usability features like USB-C connectivity, a built-in microphone for calls, and an in-line remote control. Alongside the standard finish with blue and orange earpads, Sony will also launch a limited Stranger Things Edition.

The lightweight, open-ear headphones are designed for comfort during extended listening. With USB-C support, they connect to compatible devices like smartphones without the need for charging, pairing, or updates. They boast the same 23 mm driver units as the MDR-3 to reproduce sound quality close to the original, says Sony.

The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition celebrates the spirit of the 1980s and are inspired by Max’s signature headphone style and the mysterious Upside Down from the hit Netflix series. They have exclusive design details, including an engraved Stranger Things logo, red and black earpads, and custom packaging.
