Do you remember the Nintendo Game Boy that launched in 1989? I had one as a child and wore it out playing games like Tetris for hours on end, marveling back then at the dot-matrix display. It was one of the earliest versions of handheld gaming. Of course, we have come a long way since there. But there’s a trend towards nostalgia tech, and GameSir is feeding into that with its Pocket Taco vertical mobile controller that takes me right back to the days of Game Boy gaming.
The Pocket Taco is named as such because it sort of resembles a taco shell into which your smartphone slides into like the satisfying protein and veg filling. It connects via Bluetooth and provides responsive controls while you play classic games on your phone. Looking at your phone housed inside this controller, you can’t help but be reminded of those days of playing with a Game Boy. Except now, you have a vibrant colour touchscreen to enjoy games combined with the retro controller.

Launching on Kickstarter, the GameSir Pocket Taco is a great throwback device for those who want to engage in a classic arcade experience, with a cushioned membrane ABXY and D-pad inputs supported by tactile switch bumpers and triggers. Further personalization is available through the GameSir app, which supports button remapping, D-pad diagonal lock, G-Touch and V-Touch functionality, and other advanced configuration options. Several settings can also be adjusted via on-the-fly button combinations for in-game convenience.
The secure clamp-style ensures the controller remains connected to your phone so you get a smooth gaming experience. Measuring 78 x 70.9 x 20.7mm and weighing 62.2 grams, it comes with a storage box so you can easily pop it into your bag or backpack. It automatically powers on when unfolded and switches off when closed. Along with gaming, it also has a built-in keyboard mode for switching input types and remap button values for more specialized control needs. Soft silicone pads line the phone clamp area to safeguard devices from scratches and provide a secure hold during gameplay.

The controller has a 600 mAh high-capacity battery and its hollow-bottom design aligns with most mobile charging ports so you can charge your device while playing at the same time if desired.
Available in classic grey (similar to the Game Boy) and Atom Purple (KickStarter campaign only), early bird pricing is US$35, and it’s expected to ship to backers in April 2026, with the campaign running through March 14, 2026 for those who still want to get on board.
