Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 is Coming This Year

After eight years, Nintendo is finally releasing a follow-up to its widely successful Switch gaming device. The Nintendo Switch 2, successor to the Nintendo Switch, has been confirmed to launch later this year.

Nintendo offered a first look at the new device via a first-look trailer on its YouTube channel. The video suggests a larger main screen for the handheld unit, sleeker build materials, USB-C port, a built-in adjustable kickstand, and enhanced controllers.

The new Switch will be able to play exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 games as well as be backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch games. It will work with both physical game cards and digital games, though some Nintendo Switch games may not be fully compatible with the new console. How or why, however, hasn’t been disclosed yet.

A launch with a series of events held around the world called Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025, is set for April 2, 2025, and the presumption is that the console will be available at that time as well.

The Nintendo Switch launched in 2017 and quickly became a popular device for handheld and on-the-go gaming. What fans love about it is that the unit is portable such that you can bring it to a friend’s house, pack it in a bag, even use it while commuting. However, it also sits in a dock and can easily connect to the big screen for a standard gaming experience at home.

Since the launch of the original console, Nintendo has released a few variations, but not a direct follow up. The Switch Lite came in 2019, which functions as a handheld-only unit. In 2021, Nintendo released the version with an OLED screen, which is ideal for tabletop gaming at home but not as conducive to taking with you.

This is the first direct successor console and fans are excited to see how it performs. Stay tuned.
