Warner Increases Discovery+ Subscription Fees

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has revealed that subscription pricing for the Discovery+ streaming service will be going up this month, in both Canada and the U.S.

In Canada, the new Discovery+ ad-free monthly subscription will increase from $6.99/mo. to $8.99/mo. Those who subscribe to the ad-lite subscription, meanwhile, will pay a buck more at $5.99/mo. vs. $4.99/mo.

Stateside, subscribers in the U.S. will pay the same for the ad-free subscription (in U.S. dollars, of course) but the charges for the ad-lite subscription will remain at US$4.99/mo. there.

All price increases came into effect on October 3, 2023 and thus will be reflected on the next billing cycle for existing subscribers: this includes the bill that you receive on or after November 2, 2023. New subscribers, meanwhile, can sign up at these revised prices.

This, notes Warner, is the first time pricing has been increases for Discovery+ in these markets since January 2021. The increased price is to “allow us to continue to provide can’t miss-stories in the food, home, relationships, true crime, paranormal genres – plus so much more.”

Discovery+ offers a wide variety of content, including its own slate of originals and spin-offs, shows from channels like Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Travel Channel, Magnolia Network, HGTV, and Food Network, and licensed non-scripted programming from A&E Networks, like History and Lifetime shows. You can also watch some NBCUniversal Global Distribution content, with shows like American Ninja Warrior and Top Chef Canada; as well as CNN.

Basically, if you love TLC-type shows, binging reality shows like 90 Day Fiance, and love becoming immersed in travel, food, and history shows, Discovery+ is for you. The increase in price isn’t astronomical, but it’s in line with what other streaming services have been doing of late as well.
