Dyson Gets Into Headphones Biz (Without Air Purification) With OnTrac Headphones

Dyson first got into the headphones business a few years ago when it launched the Dyson Zone headphones, the bizarre-looking contraption that integrated a face mask with a personal air purifier on the front. Now, the company has launched headphones that employ a traditional design, the Dyson OnTrac headphones.

These headphones come with active noise cancellation, deep bass, up to 55 hours of listening time, and a unique customizable look with different coloured caps and cushions. There are more than 2,000 customizable colour combinations for the outer caps and ear cushions, with the cushions crafted from ultra-soft microfibre and high-grade foam that provides both comfort and a good acoustic seal. The headphones have multi-pivot gimbal arms and a battery in the headband to ensure balanced weight distribution.

Custom active noise cancellation (ANC) algorithms use eight microphones to help cancel out up to 40dB of unwanted noise. With 40mm neodymium speaker drivers and advanced audio signal processing, they provide deep bass, says Dyson, along with clear highs. The speaker housing is tilted 13° towards the ear to provide a more direct audio response.

You’ll get up to two weeks of listening per charge, even with ANC enabled, thanks to a pair of high-capacity lithium-ion battery cells suspended in the headband. Double tap on either ear cup to turn ANC on and off.

The Dyson OnTrac are certified comfortable by the US Ergonomics, while the soft micro-suede ear cushions and optimized ear clamp provide a consistent fit across different head sizes. The four colourways are inspired by the CNC manufacturing process and include CNC aluminum, copper, and nickel, along with a ceramic Cinnabar variant with a ceramic feel painted finish. As noted, you can also customize the outer caps and ear cushions with a number of other colours to further personalize the look.

Capacitive sensors detect when the earcups have been removed from the ears to pause the audio and resume it once they are replaced. You can control playback, including play/pause, skil, fast forward, and remind using the intuitive joystick; hold it down to trigger voice commands. Dual beam-forming microphones help pick up your voice during phone calls.

The app also allows you to switch among three custom EQ modes: Bass Boost, Neutral, and Enhanced. The app also provides automatic software updates as they are available.

The Dyson OnTrac headphones will be available in Canada starting August 1, 2024 for $700.
