ABBOTT’S LATEST GENERATION FREESTYLE LIBRE 3 PLUS SENSOR TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES IN CANADA

Abbott Launches FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus Glucose Sensor in Canada

Abbott has launched its latest generation sensor-based glucose monitoring technology, the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor, in Canada. The device purports to include the “world’s smallest” glucose sensor for those living with diabetes.

Using the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, you can simply look at your smartphone to get a real-time glucose reading. You can wear the sensor for up to 15 days, and it’s small, comfortable, and discreet. In the app, you can also choose to share your readings with others, including family members or healthcare providers, in a secure way. To set it up, download the app and get started confirming your details and accepting the terms. Once you have set up an account, position the sensor and you’re good to go.

Historically, those living with diabetes have had to monitor their glucose levels by pricking their finger to draw blood, then test with a glucose meter. This process, while eventually routine, can be painful and inconvenient. The Abbott FreeStyle Libre systems eliminate the need for routine finger pricks by measuring glucose levels in interstitial fluid through a small sensor worn on the back of the upper arm. The sensor sends glucose data to an accompanying smartphone app, allowing you to track in real-time and more effectively manage diabetes.

“Providing individuals with diabetes the necessary tools and support to manage their condition effectively is essential,” says Stavroula Christopoulos, M.D., Montreal-based endocrinologist. “Sensor-based glucose monitoring plays a crucial role in their success and Abbott’s latest sensor, the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, makes it easier and simpler, further empowering people living with diabetes to take make progress along their health journey.”

According to Abbott, nearly 12 million Canadians like with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and around 90% or more have type 2. Along with monitoring blood glucose, Libre systems show people living with diabetes how different foods and exercise can impact their glucose levels over time, helping them make more informed decisions on how they can manage their diabetes.

“As the leader in sensor-based glucose monitoring technology, we are leading the way in advancing the standard of care for millions of people living with diabetes worldwide,” adds Badia Boudaiffa, Vice President of Abbott’s North American Diabetes Care Business. “We’re proud to introduce Canadians to FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, our most compact and user-friendly sensor yet, offering transformative benefits so people living with the condition can manage their health with confidence.”
