Denon has announced the new AVR-S980H 7.2-channel AV receiver, which it describes as a viable step-up from a soundbar or basic sound system.
The amplifier delivers 90 watts per channel, pairing perfectly with high-performance speakers, both wired and wireless, like the new Denon Home 200, 400, and 600 speakers. It has been tuned to provide open, spacious sound, says Denon.

Working with the HEOS multiroom audio platform, you can enjoy music throughout the house, group rooms together, or build a flexible entertainment setup. The receiver supports the option to use the new Denon Home 200, 400, and 600 speakers as wireless surrounds for a fuller home theatre experience in spaces where running wires isn’t practical. Wireless surround functionality won’t be available at launch but will arrive via a future firmware update.
Support for 1440p pass-through and AMD FreeSync helps deliver smoother visuals and more responsive gameplay, so you can enjoy it as much more gaming as for passive viewing.

The unit is designed for easy set-up with on-screen, step-by-step instructions once you plug it in to help even those new to using AVRs be able to figure it out. Once ready, you can tailor it to your preference using the TV’s on-screen menu, control via a remote app, or use the web-based interface from a smartphone or PC.
The AVR-S980H supports Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and, as mentioned, HEOS multiroom audio. As a 7.2-channel capable system, you can start small with just two speakers and expand over time as needs and budget allows. This includes setting up an immersive 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup without needing to replace the receiver.

The Denon AVR-S980H 7.2-channel AV receiver will be available in April 2026 and sell for US$949.
