Black Friday used to be a one-day annual mega shopping event. Nothing more and nothing less. Designated the Friday after the Thursday Thanksgiving day in the U.S., it was the most awaited consumer price busting extravaganza shopping day of the year, traditionally marking the start of the Christmas shopping season. Then, Black Friday was an analog affair. A trip to the store with long lineups, door crashing specials, and shoppers trampling over each other when the store doors opened.
Then came the Covid pandemic changing shopping habits for consumers already bolstered with the allure of e-commerce and on-demand delivery. Things would never be the same…including Black Friday being transformed into a mega, never-ending wave of online and flyer sales pitches weeks in advance of that single day of the past.
I actually like the Black Friday transformation, don’t you? I get sales pitches early so I can plan and budget my holiday shopping, not just online with next day delivery but a trip to the store with curbside pickup or an old-fashioned walk in the store.
